“A journey of 1,000 miles has begun” The signs of mental illness may not be so obvious. Being socially withdrawn, unable to express emotion, depressed and anxious was what life was like for George three years ago. George, 56, lives with a mental illness. One in five Australian adults live with a mental illness at some time in their life and unfortunately only half of those receive treatment. George came to Norwood Association in 2005 from a mental health service to utilise the Norwood Intensive Outreach Support program. George was allocated a Psychiatric Disability Support Worker, Fikreta. Fikreta worked closely with George to build trust in their relationship so he could confidently conquer his fears one by one and envelope all that the community could offer. With Fikreta’s assistance, George was able to break free from, as he quotes, “being a prisoner in his own home”. “I can now smell the flowers, hear the birds, live a normal life like everyone else. I can shop for clothes, get my hair cut and even make an effort to look great. Aftershave and hair gel are now things I apply daily! I can go for a walk on my own and I love going out to cafes for a coffee and piece of cake. I have become socially active and attend different recreational group activities that Norwood offer,” says George. George has become a role model for clients here at Norwood and attributes his success to Fikreta. “You are a miracle worker, an angel, but most of all, a Saint.” “George has become who he is today because of his effort and commitment to the program. George was always keen to be supported, despite his fear which was related to his illness at times. It’s an honour to be able to reflect on his progress and personal achievements…a true inspiration to me and to many of Norwood’s staff and clients. I am very proud of George and I take pride in having made a positive difference in his life. I can reflect back and take comfort that positive rehabilitation makes a huge difference in a person’s life”. George still receives ongoing support from Norwood and is now able to lead a fulfilling life within his community. George’s journey is not over and Norwood Association needs the help of its community today to help more people like George. The services Norwood Association provides are in greater demand and your support will allow us to deliver these critical services to people in need within our community. Please help Norwood Association help other’s begin their journey today by making a donation. |
